Versatile

The Boom Cable System’s modular nature provides more options for use. For example, if an extension cable is accidentally cut by the dolly track, simply remove or replace only that section; there’s no need to replace the entire boom cable system. If more length is needed so the boom operator can relocate, they simply disconnect their box and add another extension. If the cart needs to be moved further away, simply disconnect the extension from the cart and add another extension. Because the Remote Audio Boom Cable System uses a Starquad pair within the extensions exclusively for the boom mic, induced noise is not a concern even when adding several hundred feet of cable. The ability to add an extension when needed also means that there’s no need to bring out several hundred feet of cable when fifty or seventy-five will do just fine. Often, when two booms are in use, their necessary cable lengths are different. In this case, if a sound department has two complete systems, one boom operator can use extensions unused by the other. Extensions can also be fitted with XLR adapters turning them into high-quality, two-pair audio snakes.

Construction

The BOOM BOXv2 is made of heavy-gauge powder-coated aluminum and has a belt clip and an XLR input for the boom mic. The BOOM BOXv2 uses a TA5 jack for input from talkback headsets equipped with the boom operators talkback microphone (BCSHSEBC) and also has ¼-inch headphone jack as well as an XLR mic input for use with other headphones and talkback microphones. BOOM BOXv2 has a PTT (push-to-talk) button and an 8-pin, Neutricon connector for attaching to extension cables. The BOOM BOXv2 houses a 9-volt battery compartment to power the headphone amplifier and the talkback mic preamplifier (boosting the talkback mic to line level).

Cables

The extensions are made from flexible yet rugged, two-pair, Canare Starquad cable. The mixer-end fan-outs are available, terminated to connect with a variety of mixers and recorders with talkback capability. All connections within the cables are carefully soldered and protected via high-quality rubber and mesh sheathing.

Operation

When the pushbutton on the top of the Boom Box is pressed, the signal from the talkback microphone on the boom operator’s headset is amplified and sent down the boom cable extension to the mixer’s COM input as a balanced line-level signal. It also simultaneously mixes with the monitor signal from the mixer so the boom operator hears their own voice (“side tone”). This makes it comfortable and easy for the boom operator to speak quietly, as needed on the production set.

When the PTT button is not pressed, the talkback line is shorted. This short-circuit condition keeps the mixer’s talkback circuit quiet, so that it can be left ON in the mixer’s headphones, even while recording, always available for the boom op to speak when needed.
